About Stewart, BC, Canada

Situated at the end of the Portland Canal and across from Alaska's Misty Fjords National park, Stewart is a unique border town attracting as many American tourists as Canadian. Important to the economy are the industries of forestry and mining - the main employers in the town. The community is promoting the development of a wood processor and is endeavoring to cultivate bulk cargo for its port.

Visit the famous Bear Glacier, one of the few blue glaciers with the easiest access in the world. Also, take a walk on one of the hiking trails that reveal the evidence of old gold and silver mines as they take one on a walk through the magnificent coastal forest, mountain streams and alpine meadows.

Be sure to try the amazing fishing in the numerous streams and lakes. You can watch the spawning of the rare Alaskan Chum Salmon at Fish Creek. If saltwater fishing is your thing, make sure to take a boat ride on the Portland Canal to catch prawns and crabs...or maybe see a majestic killer whale.

Stewart, BC and Hyder, AK have an abundance of things to do.  Below are some of the things you can do while visiting these border towns:

	FISHING: There are several lakes and rivers in the area for fishing, boating and water-skiing. Be sure to ask some of the locals where the best spots are. It is even possible to catch crabs and prawns right off the docks!
	SKIING: Stewart and Hyder is situated near Bell 2 Lodge, a world renowned heli skiing destination. You'll never forget a great run down the snow capped mountain tops. During the winter months you will be amazed at the record snowfalls that can happen just overnight!
	RODEO: The two towns also come together to host an International Rodeo on the second weekend in June every year. This event is great for the whole family.... come experience true small town hospitality. You may even find some of the locals riding the bulls!
	TENNIS: Stewart also has two tennis courts for those of you who love to play. The tennis courts are located near Rainy Creek Park.
	GOLFING: Stewart and Hyder do not have a golf course, but do offer a great driving range. Stewart's only golf driving range, Mount Rainey Driving Range, is for the avid golfer who just can't get enough.
	SNOWMOBILING: There is so much to do in Stewart and Hyder during the winter months, such as snowmobiling. It is a treat on our glacier capped mountains. Believe it or not, but we have snowmobiling all year round! Bet you can't find that everywhere. Our snow covered mountains attract snowmobilers from all over!
	HIKING TRAILS: We offer a variety of maintained Hiking Trails. You can find more information available at the Tourist Information Centre.

Stewart and Hyder offer a lot for visitors and residents to do. Why not take in some tours or go exploring yourself?

	FISH CREEK: Fish Creek offers a unique opportunity to view and photograph Alaskan Brown (Grizzlies) and Black bears. The bears come here to feed on the chum and pink salmon which spawn in the creek. From July to September, the salmon run provides an extensive food supply for bears, gulls and bald eagles.
	SALMON GLACIER: The fifth largest glacier in North America. Looking down upon the Salmon Glacier and along the valley below you can see how the glacier is continually transforming the landscape and itself. The drive above this spectacular glacier and take pictures and make sure to stop and take photos or picnic anywhere you want.
	FESTIVALS: Stewart, British Columbia and Hyder, Alaska host International Days from July 1st to July 4th every year. Both towns join in the planning and provide many fun-filled activities throughout the celebrations.
	MUSEUM: From May to September you can experience some of Stewart and Hyder's history. Visit some of the great exhibits or simply sit back and do some reading about the communities. You will find some great movie props from Hollywood movies that have been filmed in the area. Such as: Insomnia, The Thing, Bear Island, Iceman and Leaving Normal.
	BEAR GLACIER: This road side glacier will leave you breathless with its beauty and incredible blue color. The Bear Glacier is one of the few blue glaciers with the most easiest access in the world.
